Education opens doors, but in the Centrale region of Togo, those doors remain mostly closed. The area faces serious challenges with literacy and access to learning materials. Until recently, the Babade Learning Center had only 15 books to serve its community. Thanks to the generosity of Friends of Togo and Books for Africa a shipment of books has arrived in Lomé, ready to transform the learning experience for many.

The Challenge of Education in Centrale Region
The Centrale region struggles with low literacy rates and limited educational resources. Many children and adults have little access to books or formal schooling. Literacy rates here fall well below the national average, with many adults unable to read or write. This gap limits opportunities for employment, health awareness, and community development.
Poverty plays a significant role in this educational challenge. Families often cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or supplies. Many children must work to support their households, reducing their time for study. Schools in the region often lack basic materials, and libraries are extremely rare or nonexistent.
Poverty and Its Impact on Learning
Poverty in the Centrale region affects every aspect of life. The region has limited infrastructure, with many villages lacking electricity and clean water. Economic opportunities are scarce, and subsistence farming is the main source of income. This environment makes it difficult for children to focus on education when basic needs are unmet.
The Babade Learning Center was created, orignally as a Peace Corps small grant project, to address these challenges by providing a safe space for learning and access to books. However, with only 15 books initially, the center’s impact was limited. Expanding the collection is essential to encourage reading habits and support literacy development.

A Major Step Forward with New Books
Friends of Togo, supported by many private donors, purchased a shipping container full of books through Books for Africa. These books arrived in Lomé, and two community members—the volunteer librarian of the Babade Learning Center and the president of the CVD— collected 16 boxes of books for the center.
This shipment is a huge upgrade from the center’s initial collection. The new books cover a range of topics and reading levels, offering children and adults more opportunities to learn and explore. The presence of these books will encourage more visits to the center and help build a culture of reading in the community.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Learning Center
Alafia plans to continue expanding the Babade Learning Center. This recent delivery is a wonderful first step toward building a stronger educational foundation in the Centrale region. The goal is to increase the number of books, improve the center’s facilities, and offer more programs that support literacy and lifelong learning.
Supporting this growth means more children can gain the skills they need to improve their lives. It also means empowering community members to take part in their own development through education.
How Donors Can Make a Difference
Donors who care about education and development in Togo can play a vital role. Contributions help cover the cost of books, transportation, and center improvements. Every donation brings the community closer to a future where education is accessible and valued.
By supporting projects like the Babade Learning Center, donors help break the cycle of poverty and open new possibilities for generations to come.
